Introduction

The Language Flagship Program is an initiative of the National Security Education Program in the U.S. Department of Defense. The Chinese Flagship Program at Hunter College, City University of New York is a rigorous undergraduate program of study in Mandarin Chinese language and culture that aims to enable highly-motivated undergraduate students of all majors to achieve a Superior level of proficiency in Chinese. The program welcomes applications from current Hunter College students, high school seniors who have been admitted to Hunter College or Macaulay Honors College at Hunter, and undergraduates from all majors and at all levels of proficiency in Chinese who seek to achieve a professional-level competence.

The Chinese Flagship Center at Hunter College, housed in the Chinese Program of the Department of Classical and Oriental Studies, offers the B.A. in Chinese language and literature, 7-12 adolescent education and the M.A. in the Teaching of Chinese Program.

The Language Flagship Program is comprised of both domestic and overseas study. Hunter’s Chinese Flagship is one of ten universities that offer Domestic Chinese Flagship Programs; the other institutions are Arizona State University, Brigham Young University, Indiana University, Ohio State University and Ohio Public Schools, San Francisco State University Partner Program, University of Mississippi, University of Oregon and Portland Public Schools, University of Rhode Island Partner Program, and Western Kentucky University Pilot Program.

The Overseas Chinese Flagship located in Nanjing University and administered by Brigham Young University offers a capstone-year in China including direct enrollment at Nanjing University as well as an internship in China. The capstone year-long study abroad is required by all Flagship students to reach a professional level of Chinese language proficiency by graduation.
