Program Overview

What is the Flagship K-12 Blended Learning Pilot Project?

The Flagship K-12 Blended Learning Pilot Project is a collaboration between the Hunter Chinese Flagship Program and the Jericho School District to build a national model for K-12 students to demonstrate how high school graduates can achieve advanced level proficiency (ACTFL) in Chinese using the blended learning model.

The blended learning model combines the traditional face-to-face classroom instruction plus individualized online synchronous and asynchronous instruction.  Hunter’s blended learning model was developed by identifying best practices for both second language acquisition and personalized online learning; fundamentally, it is designed to ensure that learners receive sufficient input, have opportunities for output and interaction, receive both implicit and explicit feedback, and work within a task-based framework. Students benefit from both learning in groups to share and to interact as well as learning individually to focus on personal learning interests and needs to maximize learning outcomes.

The project will also research the best practices and disseminate learning results in order to improve the quality of Chinese language education in the United States.

What is The Language Flagship?

The Language Flagship is a national effort to change the way American students learn languages through a groundbreaking approach to foreign language education.  The Flagship community is made up of 27 domestic Flagship centers and programs at 23 institutions of higher education, 10 Overseas Flagship Centers, and three K–12 investments. The program leads the nation in designing, supporting, and implementing a new paradigm for advanced language education. As an innovative partnership between the federal government and the education community, The Language Flagship graduates students with a superior level of proficiency in languages critical to U.S. national security and competitiveness, who will take their place among the next.
